The Fischer’s Lovebird (Agapornis fischeri) is part of the parrot family and is native to northern Tanzania in Africa. The Fischer's is quite small compared to other lovebirds. Fischer's lovebirds usually live in flocks and nest in holes in trees on the African savannah. The bird was first discovered by Dr. G. A. Fischer on an expedition from Pangani to Lake Victoria and named in his honor in 1887. They were first bred in North America in 1926.
Breeding Fischer's can produce a wide variety of colour mutations. The green series of Fischer's lovebirds is based on the Fischer's that is found in the wild. The main mutation from the green series is the blue series, which was first bred in the mid 1950's. To see the different mutations I have in my aviary and for more information on the mutations check out the green series and blue series pages.
